How to get cited by Perplexity: what its answers are built from
Perplexity searches the web for every answer and shows its sources, so getting cited is a question of being on the pages it retrieves. Those pages are usually recent, specific, well-structured and from domains it already trusts: review sites, documentation, comparison articles and community threads. Earn a place on those, make your own pages quotable, and measure monthly.
How Perplexity picks sources
For a vendor question it typically retrieves five to ten pages, favouring ones that match the query wording closely, were updated recently, and come from domains it has cited before. It then writes an answer that summarises them and numbers each source. If the retrieved pages name three vendors, the answer names three vendors.
What cited pages have in common
- They answer the exact question. "Best compliance automation software for startups" retrieves pages titled almost exactly that.
- They are structured. Numbered lists, tables and short sections are easier to summarise than long prose.
- They are recent. A 2026 update date beats a 2023 one for the same content.
- They are on trusted domains. G2, Capterra, Reddit, vendor docs and established blogs appear far more than new domains.
Five ways to earn a citation
- Get added to the roundups Perplexity already cites. Run the prompts, list the cited URLs, email the authors with a short, factual pitch. Updating an existing article is faster than ranking a new one.
- Publish comparison and alternatives pages with tables and a plain verdict. These match "X vs Y" and "Y alternatives" queries word for word.
- Keep review-site profiles current. Category pages on G2 and Capterra are cited constantly and update as reviews arrive.
- Answer in the Reddit threads that get cited. Genuinely, from a named account, once.
- Make your own pages quotable. A direct answer in the first sentence, a definition, a table, an updated date, and Organization schema.
How to check it worked
Run the same prompts again in four weeks and compare the cited URLs. The audit checklist shows how by hand; our monthly tracking does it automatically and reports the change in a digest. Perplexity usually reflects a new or updated page within days of indexing, which makes it the fastest engine to test on.
