GEO vs SEO: what changes when the answer is a chat reply
SEO earns a position on a results page; GEO (generative engine optimization) earns a mention in a generated answer. They share technical foundations and content quality, but GEO is decided mostly off your site, on the sources engines cite, and is measured in mentions and citations rather than rankings.
Side by side
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of success | Ranking position, click | Mention, position in the list, citation |
| Where it is decided | Your pages, backlinks | Third-party sources engines retrieve, plus your extractable pages |
| Content shape | Keyword-targeted articles and landing pages | Question-shaped: comparisons, alternatives, buyer's guides, definitions, pricing |
| Brand signals | Domain authority | Entity consistency: one name, one description, schema, sameAs |
| Measurement | Search Console, rank trackers | Repeated prompts on each engine; mention rate, share of voice, citations |
| Variance | Low day to day | High between runs; measure as rates over multiple runs |
| Time to signal | 3 to 6 months | 4 to 8 weeks for search-grounded engines |
What carries over from SEO
Crawlable, fast pages. Clear headings. Structured data. Internal links. Original research. If your SEO is in good shape, your pages are easier for engines to fetch and quote. None of that is wasted.
What does not carry over
Keyword density and backlink volume matter little to a model deciding which three vendors to name. Being on the right third-party pages, being described consistently, and having the comparison content buyers ask for matter a lot. Rankings for broad informational terms rarely translate into vendor mentions.
AEO: the content-shape half
Answer engine optimization is the part of GEO that lives on your site: a direct answer in the first sentence, definitions, tables, FAQs with schema, and facts stated plainly. It makes your pages the ones an engine quotes when it does fetch them.
How to run both
Keep the SEO programme for the on-site foundations. Add a monthly prompt audit so you know whether AI answers name you. Spend the GEO budget on third-party presence and comparison content. Share one prompt set and one report between the two so nobody duplicates work. If you want the detail, read Namedra vs an SEO agency.
